Half of Syrian refugees are children, according Onu

NEW YORK (Reuters) - More than half of the 642,000 refugees who fled civil war in Syria into neighboring countries are children and the number of people fleeing the fighting has doubled since June said a senior UN unies.

Panos Moumtzis, regional coordinator of the UN agency for refugees, said that steps have been taken to help four million people Syrie.

This concerns two million people displaced and two million who stayed at home, but also 1.1 million réfugiés.

"We're talking about using a quarter of the Syrian population. A Syrian four need of humanitarian assistance and I'm afraid that number continues to grow," said Moumtzis.

The UN hopes to collect $ 1.5 billion at a conference to bring together donors Jan. 30 in Kuwait. Currently 55 organizations, including 12 UN agencies are working to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Syrie.

Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Egypt have seen it happen on their territory tens of thousands of refugees which approximately 30% live in these camps, the rest having been hosted in facilities in villages and towns.

"People cross the border day and night. More than half of them are children who have experienced or witnessed horrific scenes, seeing their parents killed and their loved ones," he explained .

According to the UN, more than 60,000 people have been killed since the beginning of conflit.
